Recommended Reading

Below you will find a list of books recommended by staff members at EVBC. These books are not perfect, but they are generally trusted resources that can help us as we seek to know and love God more and more.  This list is also not comprehensive; there are more good books out there!

Theology

Growing in Our Knowledge of Who God Is and What He Does

  • Knowing God, J. I. Packer

  • A Theology for the Church, Daniel Akin

    • This book is a systematic theology textbook. Each chapter is by a different author on a different topic, but each chapter follows the same format. This book might be a little more challenging to work through but is a good resource.

Discipleship

Our Walk with God

  • Renovation of the Heart, Dallas Willard

  • Follow Me, David Platt

    • In this book, David Platt explores common misconceptions around what it means to follow Christ. He also walks through a Biblical understanding of what it means to follow Jesus, including what it means for a believer to make disciples.

  • Habits of Grace, David Mathis (available as a free pdf download at desiringgod.org)

  • Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, Donald Whitney

How to Study the Bible

Learning God's Word and Applying It to Our Lives

  • Journey Into God’s Word, J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays

    • Duvall and Hays offer an accessible introduction to Hermeneutics, or how to study the Bible. They include genre-specific chapters to help readers navigate the particularities of different kinds of texts.

  • Women of the Word, Jen Wilkin

    • Wilkin address the needed heart and posture behind the study of Scripture. She also includes a helpful process for studying God’s Word that can be used across all of Scripture. While Wilkin addresses the book a female audience, the study process she puts forward can be helpful to any believer.
